Welcome to 2JT!
Welcome back to school! We hope that you had a lovely Christmas and are ready to dive straight back into learning in 2019.
Until the holidays, we will be learning about the following:
Maths - multiplication and division, time and shape
Over this half term, we will be learning our 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables and related division facts. We'll be practising telling the time to the nearest five minutes, learning how many minutes there are in an hour and how many hours there are in a day. Finally, we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes, describing their properties and identifying lines of symmetry.
English - Reports; Handa's Surprise
We will be reading and writing non-chronological reports about African animals. We'll be learning about verb tenses, expanded noun phrases and using different conjunctions (and, but, so, because, if, when).
Later on, we'll be learning the story of Handa's Surprise and writing our own version.
This half term our topic is all about Africa and comparing it to where we live. We will be looking at houses, climate, school and animals.
We will be continuing our work on adaptation, dependency and food chains, applying these to African animals. We will be looking at what animals, including humans, need to survive and what foods we need to keep healthy.
Homework will be given each Friday and will almost always consist of a Maths or Literacy activity to be completed and handed in by the following Wednesday; and spellings to be practised throughout the week for a test each Thursday. In addition all the children have their own ongoing targets to practise.
Reading books should be in school every day and the children do need to be reading at home for at least ten minutes every day at this stage. Please sign your child’s reading record when they have read so that books can be changed regularly. As the half term progresses, the children will also have access to other books on their band on Bug Club!
Our PE days this year are Monday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child’s PE kit, consisting of a white tee shirt, navy shorts and pumps, is in school. During the colder months, your child can wear a tracksuit during PE lessons. We will send PE kits home at the end of each half term so that they can be washed and returned to school after the holidays.
