2JT

Welcome to 2JT!

Welcome back to school! We hope that you have enjoyed your summer break and are ready for the challenge of Year 2.

We will begin this year by learning about the following topics:

Maths - number and place value; addition and subtraction

We will be reading and writing numbers up to 100; using < > and = to compare numbers; partitioning numbers into tens and units and using number facts to solve problems.

Later on we will be learning how to add and subtract a range of numbers up to 100.

English - recount writing; Peter Rabbit

We will be reading and writing our own recounts, based on our trip to Portland Basin; learning about present and past tense verbs; identifying time adverbials and using them to write a variety of sentences.

Our second English unit will involve reading the story of Peter Rabbit and using the text to develop our own story writing skills.

Topic - Droylsden 100 years ago

We will be taking a trip back in time to discover what life in Droylsden would have been like one hundred years ago. We will be going to Portland Basin and having our very own Edwardian Day in school to fully immerse ourselves in this topic.

Science - Materials

We will be learning about a variety of materials and how suitable they are for certain tasks. Could you make a car out of cardboard? Would a metal raincoat be suitable to wear? Would a window made from rubber work? We will be investigating these questions and looking at how materials can be changed.

Important information

Homework will be given each Friday and will almost always consist of a Maths or Literacy activity to be completed and handed in by the following Wednesday; and spellings to be practised throughout the week for a test each Thursday. In addition all the children have their own ongoing targets to practise.

Reading books should be in school every day and the children do need to be reading at home for at least ten minutes every day at this stage. Please sign your child’s reading record when they have read so that books can be changed regularly. As the half term progresses, the children will also have access to other books on their band on Bug Club!

Our PE days this year are Monday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child’s PE kit, consisting of a white tee shirt, navy shorts and pumps, is in school. During the colder months, your child can wear a tracksuit during PE lessons. We will send PE kits home at the end of each half term so that they can be washed and returned to school after the holidays.
