Hello pupils, parents and visitors,

Thank you for taking the time to visit the 'Reading at Fairfield Road' area of our school website. Here pupils, parents, staff and visitors will find a whole host of reading resources, ideas and inspiration.

 

In February 2019, Fairfield Road achieved the One Education 'Silver Reading Award'. This was in recognition of the high quality teaching and learning of phonics, reading and children's literature at our school.

 

We continue to work hard so that our pupils can decode, understand and enjoy everything they read at school, at home and in the wider world.

Reading increases  a child's sense of achievement, confidence, self-esteem and widens horizons. It exposes learners to a richer variety of vocabulary and makes them more articulate. Reading can be entertaining, fun and inspire minds and imagination.  At Fairfield Road we aim to foster a love of reading that stretches beyond the physical boundaries of our classrooms to homes and families.

 

Children who read for pleasure do significantly better at school. Children who read for pleasure make more progress in mathematics, vocabulary and spelling, as well as in reading.

Evidence suggests that there is a positive relationship between reading frequency, reading enjoyment and attainment.

(Clark 2011; Clark and Douglas 2011).

 

Reading for pleasure is strongly influenced by relationships between teachers and children, and children and families.
