Spring 1 Reading in Year 1

Spring 1
This half term, we've been reading Meerkat Mail. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to explore what fiction and non-fiction books are; comparing postcards, information texts and meerkat stories. We visited our school library and organised a selection of books into fiction and non-fiction. We had further discussions about this in our writing process by finishing the unit writing a whole report all about meerkats!
During story time this half term, we've had some real belly laughs with the likes of 'The Dragon with the Blazing Bottom' and 'Pig's Knickers'. We actively encourage the children to find an author or genre that they are interested in and to read as much as possible for pleasure. This includes the children reading and listening to both stories and non-fiction texts as well as accessing stories online through our school subscription to Bug Club. All usernames and passwords can be found on the inside cover of children's reading records.
We are really looking forward to World Book Day next half term and exploring our new text 'Toy Boat'. Check back next half term for our update. We cannot wait to share our work with you.
