Year 6
Here are the key books we study in class in Year 6. Below, you can click the document to find out more about how and why we use these books.
Autumn 1

This half term, the children have been looking at texts relating to our history topic of Ancient China. These texts include: Willow Tree Pattern Story, Mulan and The Firework-Maker's Daughter. Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories and have used their newly acquired knowledge in their own writing in English lessons.
We have created a reading space within the classroom for the children to enjoy when reading to an adult, or when they have some free time. The class library has a wide range of books including: Year 6 recommended reads, classic texts, age-appropriate narratives, books on diversity and historical titles.
We are actively encouraging the children to read as much as possible at home using their reading book or the online resource, Bug Club. Both of these are assigned to each child's reading band so they should provide a suitable challenge for them.
Autumn 2

Our Guided Reading sessions this half term have centred around the classic children's text, 'The wind in the willows'. The children have enjoyed learning about Ratty, Mole, Toad and Badger and their adventures through the various seasons. This text was also used as the foundation for our diary entries based on Mole's first experience of life above his burrow and along the river.
Spring 1
We have recently purchased a number of the same reading books in Year 6 to encourage group reading. The children now have the option to spend their breaks and dinner times inside - if they wish - reading a story together. The Fork, The Witch and The Worm (the first book in the Tales from Alagaësia series by Christopher Paolini) has been incredibly popular amongst our girls.
Spring 2
We celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March 2022 by coming to school dressed as an AMAZING ADJECTIVE and having a special themed lunch. There were also special assemblies; best dressed awards; special story times and a variety of fun activities throughout the day!
One of the competition winners was our very own Quinn in 6JS. This is what Mr McCabe had to say:
"Quinn’s (6JS) book review blew us all away! It was so engaging, well presented and informative. She won the book review competition in upper Key Stage 2! Thank you Quinn!"
