Mathematics
“The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.”
Paul Halmos
National Curriculum
Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
Mission statement
Our ambition at Fairfield Road is to offer a rich mathematics curriculum that allows our children to:
- become confident, skilled and resilient mathematicians
- understand that Mathematics is a fundamental part of everyday life and the world we live in.
- develop an enthusiastic attitude towards the subject
- build resilience in this subject – mistakes are part of their learning journey and help them to improve in the future.
Passports
From the first stage of their education at Fairfield, children are assessed against a school-based passport scheme that ensures that all key facts and number skills are taught in progression. The objectives are based on the National Curriculum and cover a variety of mathematical topics: Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, Measurement, Geometry and Algebra. To confirm that a child has achieved automaticity of a passport objective, they will be given a test – comprising of 10 questions – which they must sit within 1 minute and 40 seconds (10 seconds per question). For those that need extra time, an additional 25% will be given. On successful completion of each passport, the children receive a badge and a certificate from the subject leader.
The document below details all of our passports and the objectives the children need to achieve in order to complete their passport; they need to achieve each objective three times over the course of the year.
